What made you describe your business a Communications and Understanding Project?
LC: I have been a student of great thinkers on Information and Marketing for a long time. People like Joey Reiman, the clever and very interesting marketer from Atlanta and founder of BrightHouse whose ideas changed my life when he wrote Thinking For a Living many years ago. I’ve been doing it intentionally since reading his amazing book.
Futurist Faith Popcorn and her book The Popcorn Report was required reading for me and my radio colleagues at WHQT in Miami. Brilliant Program Director Fleetwood Gruver (yes, that is his real name) had all of the on-air folks read her methodology and I appreciate that assignment. It made me more aware of the end user, the listener and what he or she needed from my brand and on-air presence. Popcorn’s writing made me think, and forward think.
Richard Saul Wurman, the author of Information Anxiety left an indelible imprint on my life in 1989 with his groundbreaking and super unorthodox book. In it, he broke the mold and bucked tradition using marginalia throughout – and created what was for me an almost 3-D experience of reading.
Wurman wrote so that I could flip around – and go to whatever interested me at the moment. There was no real order. Great! There were many typographic and logotype images on each page..and it was laid out in a visually stimulating way. It was a fascinating way for me to read and to understand.
Marginalia has become commonplace now. We see it everywhere but never stop to think about where and how it started. I believe that Wurman should be credited with being the pioneer.
I have been a student of Psychology since adolescence. Always wondered why people do and say what they did and said. Working in the news business, news/talk radio especially, honed my skills for communications and understanding -- as I had a finite amount of air time to articulate a cohesive and comprehensive message.
As a writer and producer, I mastered the art of writing 'short' and making intentional use of every single word. It was important to me that people go away with not just 'the news" but an understanding of the days events, also be informed, and in some cases, entertained.

What is Information Anxiety?
I did not coin the term Information Anxiety but learned of it 20 years ago in Richard Saul Wurman’s book of the same name. Information Anxiety is described by Wurman as being produced by the ever-widening gap between what we understand and what we think we should understand. Information Anxiety is the black hole, he said between data and knowledge. It happens when information doesn’t tell us what we really want to know.
Information is plentiful. It updates itself constantly, and now, in nanoseconds. We are in a new troposphere of access – in an era where a small businesspersons storefront can have the same online visibility as a huge mega-chain. But just as you can get a potential customer in a mouseclick – you can also lose them forever, if your content is not presented in an interesting and authentic way.
